What is bird flu (Avian Influenza)?
It is a kind of virus that spread between wild aquatic birds (EX:
ducks, geese, swans)
And via these animals, virus can spread to domestic animal such as chicken, ducks, turkeys

There are many kinds of bird flu, and most of them don’t affect human. Yet, there are still 4 kinds of viruses that can infect people and cause severe symptoms from fever, and soar muscle to Pneumonia (lung disease) and might lead to death.

There are several ways that you might catch bird flu:

     Touching infected birds
Touching droppings or bedding
Killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking (contact with blood/ virus)

Overall, it is hard for people to catch bird flu. Yet there are bigger chances for poultry farm workers to
catch it.

Hence, it is important to have proper protection when culling infected poultry

There are 3 purposes for wearing proper protection

  • Avoid staff from infected by virus
  • Prevent the virus from spreading to non-contaminated areas
  • Protect frontline workers’ safety from contamination when cleaning, disinfecting, and using chemicals

According to the UK government, full protection includes appropriate coveralls, disposable gloves, rubber or
polyurethane boots, FFP3 respirator, and protection for eyes

Coverall selection

To select a coverall that is suitable for this situation, there are few things to follow:

  • Coverall that meets ISO 16603 : Resistance to penetration by blood/fluids
  • Coverall that meets ISO 16604 : Resistance to penetration by blood-borne
  • Water resistant coverall

Remember, it is always better safe than sorry. Even though there are small chances for human to catch bird flu, it is still necessary to protect yourself and your loved one.
